Social Anxiety Disorder

A person with social anxiety disorder has significant anxiety and discomfort about being embarrassed, humiliated, rejected or looked down on in social interactions - being exposed to unfamiliar people and the fear of being scrutinised in public.

The fear is irrational and social situations are avoided or endured with a high level of distress. There is anticipatory anxiety and frequently significant restriction on social activities as a result. There may be extreme fear of public speaking, meeting new people or eating/drinking in public.
